Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
