California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is facing water scarcity. This milestone comes on the heels of challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Shows No Drought

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is free from any level of drought. This shift was driven by weeks of heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, resulting in significant overflow, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, pockets like Modoc County were deemed unusually parched. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

But, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which accounts for about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the next challenge is to sustaining this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
