The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
