The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A recent initialism emerged a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for doctors to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what unity looks like.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
