The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
