Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
